Pointer Breed Information

The Pointer in Obedience

There is no prettier sight than a Pointer in the off-lead obedience exercises with his head held proudly, nose testing the wind, and tail waving from side to side while trotting alongside its master. Recalls are done with a blast, as though the dog has been released from a cannon, barreling toward their master in joy. A Pointer is truly an elegant, willing, obedience dog, with strong physical characteristics and athleticism which enable him to perform the advanced exercises with ease and abandon.

Although Pointers may not be the obedience dogs for everyone because of their exuberant hunting temperament, they can and do make fine obedience dogs. With the proper handling, a pointer knows no equal in the obedience ring. This is a true test of the versatility of the breed.
